Chicago is gearing up to join forces with several cities across the

country to fight police brutality and racist judicial repression. The
October 22nd Coalition is growing movement that euts through
ideologies and limited agendas. We are joining forces because we
believe strongly in social justice and harbor deep respect,
remembrance and solidarity with and for those who have fallen victim
1o state violence and their families - either on the mean streets or
behind the gun towers of the prisons.

We are planning three days of actions October 20,21 & 22. Here in
Chicago, on Friday the 20th, we will rally and march, commencing at
noon at the Federal Plaza, located at Adams and Dearborn. Wear
blacki On Saturaday, we'll hold a sort of cultural celebration with Act
Your Rage music, poetry, dance and youth culture at a site to be.
determined. On Sunday, we hold a day of remembrance for the Stolen
Lives of those victims of police violence. We plan on meeting at Cook
County jail in the afternoon sometime. o demonstrate our solidarity
with those being held captive. This will include testimony from the
family members of victims,

More and more, the police are showing themselves to be the most
organized, vicious, violent gang to ever menace Americal They literally
get away with murder because they are being protected by the state.
In place of accountability fies contempt for the citizens!

‘They are also the body snatchers for the very crimnal injustice
system. Two millionof our brothers & sisters, mothers & fathers, sons
& daughters are languishing in the nation's vast gulag archipelligo.
Neglect, torture, rape and murder occur daily and mostly, anonymously.

We must join forces with prisoners struggling for their rights, who
are being held in slave-like captivity in this war on the poor and people
of color. The wor has indeed been brought home!

On Sunday, October 22nd, at 3 pm, cifizens will converge af 26th
and Calfomiain support of prisoners being held here and
throughout the vast gulag system in America. The war on the streefs
against constant police harassment, racial profiing, brutality and
anesting is also being waged by over two milion people, who have
gone through the comupt judiicial system and now languish in
camps. Violence, sexism, homophobia and racism are most
vinlently concentrated behind bars. Deprivaion, medical neglect,
bogus conduct fickets, and all forms of repression occur every day.

We willshow our solidarity 10 our brofhers and sisters who are.
prisoners in this war by reading statements and poehy by them and
marching completely around fhis urban concentration comp. We.
will also hear the souksearing festimony of the family members of
police murder victims, here in Chicago.

This struggle is directly connected fo the communities being
menaced and the prisoners who have akready been snaiched away
from us. Each prisoner means $40.000 per year 1o the wildly
profitable punishment industry. The anfi “gang" foitering laws, the
racist drug laws, parole violator sweeps, efc. ore young
blacks. hispanics and other poor people info prsons, where routine
fengthy sentences are being meted out. Massive white collor crime
is not even prosecuted, but rather paid for by tapayer monies! The
real criminals - the murderers and plunderers of this world are the
ones deciding who goes 1o jail - and who gels pul fo death there.

Right now the US. govemment is supplying Colombia with
Vietnam-era heficopfer gunships fo do fo those peasants what the
US. govemment did in Vietnam - poison the crops, herd people onfo
“shategic hamlefs" and rain armies (ond *deoth squads”) fo sow
terror and death throughout the populace. Thisis all being done
under the guise of the “drug war” - the same war being waged in
our communifies which has cloimed so many hundreds of thousands
of prisoners. We must organize 1o stop this madness, here and therel

Ominous new forfure fechniques and sensory deprivations are
being implemented throughout the prison system fo single out and
punish acivists, iailhouse lawyers, writers, organizers elc. Maximum
‘control unis, "SHU" units, and ofher Dantesque purishments are
being standardized throughout the vast prison system. Prisoners are
‘whisked from prison fo prison, often in the dead of night ond locked
away in these clinical dungeons, such as Tamms, on the flimsiest of

charges. Administrative detentions and rules violations, which are
easily umped up and not subject to court proceedings, add fime
fo sentences. and make that time the most insufferable. Indeed, the

Mumia Abu-Jamal is the most famous case of judicial injustice.
foday. and his is the Rosenberg Case of this generation. But, there
are many Mumia's locked away foday. who are fighting for justice
and trying fo get out the truth about conditions in these hellholes.
For example, Zolo Agona Azania. a brilliant New Afrikan writer and
orlist, who has been on death row in Michigan City. Indiana, has
been given a “death date” of October 25thi We can't allow the
government to muider another one of our courageous teachers! Al
Khalid Abdullah, the brilliant founder of the PPWC - Politicol Prisoners
of War Codilition, is constantly being transfered throughout the
Michigan system, routinely denied parole and subjected to
persecution. Similarly, Jerome White-Bey. has. spent much of his time
i solitary confinement in Missouri, because of his great work building
up the MPLU - Missouri Prison Labor Union. Khallarni X. Khaldun, who
ccame out of the mean streets of Gary, IN as Leonard. McQuay. spent
14 years in prison. offen at Maximum Conirol Facilfes for his sirong
activism. Within five minutes of his release, he was whisked away 1o
LaPorte County Jail to face a murder charge of a guord. Bul, there
810 evidence, for this guard died in 19941 - six years ogo, ond stil he.
has never gone to trial for ifl Karen Horning s @ drug war prisoner in
Texas, who at one point was given six life sentences for LSD!
Recently. she was finally diagnosed os having advanced Lyme
Disease, which would have been easily curable if diagnosed early
on. She now faces the amputation of her feetll Eddie Holcher, @
longtime activist for Nafive American rights now faces o murder
charge frame-up in Norih Caroling. The anes they don't kil - with

In December 1994, Heather Wells was sexually affacked by on
agent of the state of Washinglon of the Washington Correctional
Center for Women. This left Ms. Wells pregnant and now with a baby.
gifl who hos since been placed in a foster home. No chorges have
been filed agalnst the agent aMtacker.

Al the Federal Correctional Instifute, in Dublin, CA, Robin Lucus
wos sexually attacked several fimes as male prison guards allowed
men 1o enter her cell. Unilke Wells, who was affacked by one guard.
Lucus was assaulted repeatedly.

While siting In his cor and surrounded by armed police, 18 year
old Dontae Dawson, who was unarmed. was shot and killed by one
of the police, who cloimed he thought he saw @ gun.

Ve are all lamiliar with the murder of Sister Tyesha Miller, who like
Dowson, wos murdered by police as she slept In her cor.

There have been 25 complaints of sexual abuse at the sfate’s
fargest women's prison in Richmond. VA. It is so bad, thot Governor
Jim Gilmore hos ordered an investigation.

Bock in the 1970's, | recall when the K1u Klux Kian announced o

in Joils and prisons. as guards. Inside the joils and prisons they
humiliate, maim and kill. They kill for the same purpose they killed
o the fime of the Emancipation Proclamation. The stafe sanctioned
these murders, by allowing the KXK o run rampant in the Latino,
Aliican, Mexican and Jewish communifies and especially In the
priton communilies. Town here in the swamps of Loulsiana, we

Anarchists Must Know the True History of the Black
struggle 5

In a recent article I wrote entitled "Why Aren't More
People of Color in the Anarchist Movement?® I pointed
out the need for anarchists (vorld-wide) to begin
getting involved, working with, and supporting the
causes of Blacks, Latinos, First Nations' people (aks
Native Americans) so that the overall anarchist
comnunity will reflect its true ideals and philosophy
in principles which calls for a political philosophy
that embraces democracy and freedom, and seeks to
destroy all forms of coercion and oppression. For a
philosophy based on a collective whereby people can
freely associate with equal power to determine their
future, it is vital that there be a clear
understanding of the Black struggles of yesterday and
today. Murray Bookchin, in The Modern Crisis, p19,
stated *.. the making of the human being.. is a
collective process, a process in which both community
and the individual participate.” If we understand
this, and if we are sincere about the philosophies of
anarchy, then we must understand why it is imperative
to, not only understand the TRUE historical facts as
they relate to Blacks and other peoples of colour, but
also immerse ourselves into the continuing struggle
they (we) face today.

The anarchist community need to know about the black
women who stood up and voiced their anger against the
fierce white oppression and who paved the way for the
modern women's’ liberation movement that are too often
buried within the pages of HIStory. Take the question
of the slave revolts leading to the birth of
Abolitionism, which created a new chapter in American
character. The very nature of anarchism is the
absolute rejection of oppression and repression. The
slaves in Amerika were FORCED to take names given,
branded upon them by white slave owners. Therefore the
simple act of choosing a name outside the slave
owners' enforcement was, not only a courageous act,
but also an act right out of the pages of anarchism.
It may sound rather simple but let us examine this
point: a Black woman (Sojourner Truth) decided she no
longer wished to be branded by slave owners by
carrying the name given to her. THAT is the first step
of anarchist rebellion and the rejection of
patriarchy, as she also rejected the name of her
husband, which patriarchal society dictated a woman
must take after marriage in her time. She said she

‘talked with God, told hin she refused to bear & 1)
slave name, and asked what she should do? "He"
inswered her as follows: Sojourn the whole world over
ind tell everyone the truth about American democracy,
it doesn't exist for blacks. That is how she
lecided to call herself "Sojourner Truth". This
iistorical act falls right in line with anarchist
riews. To quote Proudhon, "All associated and all
‘ree.” Or, as Luigi Galleani puts it, anarchism is

‘the autonomy of the individual within the freedom of
\ssociation.”

(n 1831 when the slave Nat Turner led a save revolt in
:he State of Virginia, he acted from the very same
>rinciples that anarchy proclaims, namely; if liberty
is essential for the fullest development of the
individual, then equality is essential for liberty to
:xist. There can be no real freedom in a
Slass-oriented hierarchical society laden with
>rofound inequalities of power, wealth and privilege.
3ut how many anarchists have ever viewed the black
slave revolts as anarchy in nature and in motion?

Also, in the same year as Nat Turner's Slave revolt
(1831), Maria Stewart spoke out in public - the first
american-born woman, white or black, to speak

sublicly. Here is what she said:

"0 ye daughters of Afrika, awake! Awake! Arise! No
longer sleep nor slumber but distinguish yourselves.
Show forth to the world that ye are endowed with noble
and exalted faculties.. How long shall the fair
Jaughters of Afrika be compelled to bury their minds
and talents beneath a load of iron pots and kettles?..
How long shall a mean set of men flatter us with their
sniles and enrich themselves with our hard earnings,
their wives' fingers sparkling with rings and they
themselves laughing at our folly?" Again, this shows a
strong anarchist line being held, being proclaimed
for "anarchy® means "without rulers” or "without
(hierarchical) authority.” Maria Stewart was on point
because anarchists are anti-authoritarians, believing
that no human being should dominate another. Yet how
many anarchists have ever known of this black woman's
speech or her name? Or that of Sojourner Truth? This
is what 1 mean when I said it is imperative that
collectively, the anarchist community involve
thenselves, learn, know and embrace the struggles of
people of colour so that the overall anarchist
comnunity isn't, in appearance, a majority white
radical movement but a multi-cultural movement and
well-versed so that anarchist literature speaks to all
people.

Most, if not all, anarchist literature that 1've read
had figures representing ONLY white people, including
cartoons. It strikes me as. odd that this would be so,
because the message displays a negation of non-whites,
uhich, while it may not be che intention, send a
message of exclusion. The figure or cartoon of a /7
black-masked white-faced person doesn't really say to
non-whites *we include you". Therefore, deep within
the premise of anarchism exists an element of race
exclusion. Of ethnic exclusion, though there may be
rationalisations to the contrary. Tom Patterson, wrote
in “Inventing Western Civilisation" (1997): *The word
civilisation evokes powerful images and
understandings.® How much more of a powerful image can
there be when we only project the figures, pictures
and cartoons presenting anarchy as white, i.e. with
features clearly definable as white? I have made this
same claim to my Wobbly comrades in the Industrial
Workers of the World (IWW) asking that they change the
old image of a white man in overalls with his big arms
folded across his chest because it reflects a symbol
of white male superiority and thus alienates blacks
and other peoples of colour and women. Within the
anarchist collective or within the IWW, there are no
images of Blackness, only of whiteness, which if truly
examined, goes against the very principles anarchism
proclains. Social equality and individual liberty are
inseparable. Without the collective self-management of
decisions that affect a group (equality) fo complement
the individual self-management of decisions that
affect the individual (liberty), a free society is
impossible. (Principles of Anarchism, p).

The recent events in Seattle's protest of the WTO saw
very few black people in mass protest but it is black
people the world over who suffer most form Capital's
disenfranchisement and unfair labour practices.
Anarchists must address this issue and ask "why?
Anarchists must reach into the bowels of the black
communities to find out what caused their lack of
interest in the march and protest of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington DC
and then ponder over whether or not the black
community was truly contacted and/or invited to give
real input into the demonstrations and have their
issues and grievances truly heard, represented and
fought for. We cannot be parading around in masks and
signs pretending to be against the evils and
inhumanity of Capitalism while at the same time
negate, in our actions, those most affected by
capitalism.

PRISON: THE NEW SLAVERY?

Leave it o capitalism to find a way o make 8 profit from someone clse’s
misery. Over two million of our friends, neighbors, and relatives are in
state and federal prisons, for whatever reason, right now. The
Prison-Industrial Complex, as it is called by some activists i really
“new” form of slavery with a "twist", it highly profitable several
different ways.

Tonly eall it "new" advisedly because chattel slavery in the early days of
this country elso hed a profit mofive, but today’ slavery is corporatc
slavery run by some of the biggest businesses in the country. Its motive is
10 take a mass prison populstion of poor people and to make money by : (1)
charging rent and fees for being in jail(2) private prisons, (3) setting up
prison corporations to compete with “free” labor, and (4)exploitaion of
prison labor by "factories behind fences”.

With the rise of the current right-wing (ant-crime) political agenda by
both of the major political partcs in this country, more and more prisoners
have been preyed upon by a vindictive public, egged on by the greedy
politicians. For years, the masses of people have been told that prisoners
are being "coddled” and treated bettr than the average worker outside, and
in return they want to inflict pain on them more. *Take away their tv sets
and radios, seize their weight lifting equipment, stop their visitation with
their families, lock ‘em in their cells 24 hours-2 day, and while you're at

it make ‘em pay rent just like we do!” These are poor people, many of whom
committed crimes in the first place because they couldn' pay their own
rent, less known paying the states rent while in prison. Its a foolish

idea, and is even more punitive than the politicians called for, but they
were quick to latch on t0 it.“What a great idea, we *can® get blood from a
turmip!”

The idea of reating a private corporation o run the prison system began 2.3
in 1980 with a Nashville-based company called Corrections Corporation of
America. After taking over the Hanilton County (TN.) workhouse for it first
contract in 1981, CCA has now spread o 32 sates, and several foregin
countrics. Iis traded on the New York and American stock exchanges, and
has made its investors billions of dollrs in profits. The way it works is

that it takes over prison orserie of prisons, promising local govemment
and state offiials that it can save substantial amounts of money by running
the prison as a morfe cfficient "business". This has yet to be proven, even
though it slashes the waiges of prison guards, and cus back on prisoncr
expenses for food, medicine and other supplies. What we do know is that the
conditions for the people inside worsens drasically, when a private company
takes over. In fuct, en persons have died at the Silverdale workhouse out-
side Chattaaooga since CCA has taken over, and similar artocities have
befallen CCA facilities all over the country, whethe the beating or deaths

of prisoners, escapes, riots, or ssikes. But the mistreatment of prisoners

o their protests did not aflect the bottom line at al of the CCA prison
capitalsts. In fuct, smelling money, other corporations, especially ts mail
competitor Wackenhut Correctional Services, have entered ther fray like
sharks fecding on a bloody carcass. The market between all the corporations

is $4 billion dollarsin contracts now, and they don't intend 10 be left out!

Another bulding block of the prison-industrial complex is prison industrial
corporations such as the UNICOR, run by the Fedral Prison Industries.
'UNICOR, based in almostall the federal prisons, makes everything from
guided missle parts 0 clothing and furniture for the military and federal
gencies,in factthey make over 500 items. It may surprise some to hear
thet they have slmost $100-500 million dollars in sals, and $30-550
million

i profits each year. By contrast, the prisoners make about $1.00-52.00 per
hour. For years, federal law forbade them from competing with fee labor,
bt this has now been changed, and the low waged prison labor s being used
10 not only undermine free abor, but drive companies out of business n the
private sector. The stte prisons have now formed similar companies o run
their own prison businesses. One thing for sure, is not just icense:

plates they make any more!

Finally, $o called “fuctories behind fences", where a company is allowed to
hire or rent a prisoner sales force or customer service team,is becoming.
more aad more common. Some of the largest compenies in America: Microsoft,
TWA, Sears Rocbuck and others are using prisoners as customer service
agents, seamstresses, airline reservation agents, assemblers, and other
‘workers. This even includes the creation of nique brands of clothing and
other products such as *Prison Blues” denim jeans, which are made
exclusively in prison workshops. This slave Iabor has not yet been
vehemently objected to by either organized labor, civil rights groups or
prisoners rights organizations, though a number of exposes have been done
by the radical press. But an effective coalition must be built before it will
stop.

‘The upshot of alltis s that this is slavery, and even though the 13th
amendment (0 the national consiitution allegedly outlaws slavery, (except
for commission of a crime”) it is permitted because these slaves don't
belong to a plantation owner, but (o the state. They are just "rented out™

to capitalist corporations. It i also popular because of the anti-<rime.
hysteria, and putting the prisoners to work is a popular idea. Yet, nobody
is seeing the real picture.

Although we want to end prison slavery entirely, prisoners rights

activist, civilliberarians and the Black community generally, must demand
that these prisoners be given the same rights as workers outside: thet they
be covered by OSHA regulations to ensure a safe workplace, that they be:
given the same rights 10 organize labor unions, and that they not be
‘exploited by their keepers with their eyes on a fast buck. They should be
paid the same living wage as workers on the outside. Ultimately the whole
question the outright abolition, or at least of a moratorium on the
ofprisons has to be factored in, but this will do for now. Some faimess

dead yet, and I'm not giving up without a fight. I've seen far
too many people die in here.

I'm sorry to hear of your friend Vergie's loss. Far too
many people go untreated. Did | ever send you the second
article by Betty Brink? My friend Janice was featured. She
had been vomiting blood for months, but they said there was
nothing wrong with her, she had a brain tumor.

Another woman here went to sick call 2-3 times a week for
6 weeks. She dad a chronic case of diarrhea. Nothing
helped. They finally sent her to the outside hospital after she
lost complete control of her bowels. She was in the critical
unit and a respirator within days. Now she's in a coma.
They don't expect her to live and are shipping her off to a
hospice center. We believe everything was due to
mistreated -UNTREATED- gallstones, | refuse to go out like
that

Last weekend | had a visitor, a friend | hadn't seen in 8
years came down from Canada just to see me. She'lltry to
come back before the end of the year. | had a fantastic time.
Oct. 20" a couple of other friends are driving down from St.
Louis. It's so fantastic to have company after so very long. |
can't wait to see them.

My name is Anthony Rayson and | am the Midwest
Coordinator for the PPWC - Polical Prisoners of War
Codlition. This is a very sefious, worldwide group of prison
educators and activists. |want to mentfion two important
brothers. Zolo Agona Azania is on death row in Michigan
City. Indiana and has been given a death date of October
25th. Zolo is @ renown New Afiikan scholar and ortist, who
the state is trying to murder, just like Mumia. We've stopped
the killers for now, but need more help. Khaifani X. Khaldun
emerged from the mean streets of Gary and info prison,
Wwhere he experienced a tue polifical awakening. Ever
since, he has been a fion in the struggle for black liberation.
He was finally released after fourteen years, into the
embrace of his family. Within five minutes, they snatched
him away, to frame him on a six year old murder charge of
9 prison guard, which they have no evidence for!

These types of stories are rampant throughout this
punishment industry. Our loved ones are being sent to
clinical forture chambers, such as TAMMS, for speaking their
minds and helping their fellow prisoners. We must make
every effort to help them, to leamn from them and support
them. Inside or outside. it's the same fight!
Women are being dragooned at a horrific rate. Eighty
per cent of them are mothers with young children! Our
youth are having their whole generation targetted for
incarceration. There is a frenzy of incarceration going on,
for this evil industry is wildly profitable for o number of
reasons. Each prisoner means $40,000 - every year!

As the real criminals go around the world, bombing
whole countries, starving children fo death, ruining cultures,
destroying the environment, aming and training death
squad puppet regimes, pillaging all the resources and
declaring war on the world's future, the young, black, lafino
and poor are being rounded up for this modern day
domestic slave market. They try fo intimidate us with these
long prison terms. The world gets bombs and we get bars!

The “War on Drugs” is an elaborate worldwide offensive,
Wwhere we are séeing Colombia being tumed info another
Vietnam-style kiling field of US. supplied helicopter gunships
and ecocide. Athome, the racist drug laws target young
blacks for decades of incarceration for what is a social
problem. not a criminal offense. The punishment is the
same for 500 grams of powder cocaine as it s for 5 grams of
crack! The big banks rake in billions, while the street kids
wind up in Menard! Recently, two traders at the Board of

Trade were caught dealing cocaine on the floor of the
exchange. They were temporarily banned from the floor!

We must realize what we are up against. We are faced
with a vicious fascist govenment, based on greed,
coersion, violence, lies and death. The prison abolifion
struggle is ground zero in this war and we must become
educators, activists and warriors in this life and death

I'guess I'll give you an update - or at leost as
much as 1 can. It fook 2 days for jury selection due
10 the number of people who thought we were
quilty due fo the media. The first day of frial a juror
was released and the alfemate fook her place. She
was scared for her life and discussed that wy/ several
jurors. My attomey filed for @ mistriol - denled.

Evidence has been entered that shows that the
fingerprints found on the bombs of the Oil Co. do not
match me or my co-defendant. It has oko been shown
that evidence has been tampered with. One of the
officers biatantly lied on the stand and it will be proven.

1 like this demonstration against police brutality and the
criminalization of the youth of this country, | don't think it's
possible to put forth an argument in a rational sense that
would counter the seriousness of these two issues. But
there're those who would aggressively oppose these issues
probably as a result of having a loved one lost, a victim of a
violent act. And those who've been manipulated by the
propaganda constantly being propagated via the media that
the youth of this country is out of control. Having no respect
for the law, which govern society, are committing serious
violent acts of crime. Thus, should be treated as adults,
giving them (young folks) adult prison sentences. | do think
it's clear that once emotions and fear become involved,
deeply entrance in any issue that affects one on a personal
leve, te judgement is impaired. Although, we can
understand their sentiment and concerned, being truly
sympathetic with those suffering from the lost of a a loved
one.

Therefore, | think it's apparent that it be made
unequivocally clear. The building of a viable demonstration
against police brutality and criminaliaion of our youth,
doesn't say in the least bit we support people who engage in
criminal activity of any kind. Because, we are strongly anti-
crime advocates, it's this fundamental position that motivates
and guides one social practice. Actively engaging in a
‘demonstration against police brutality and the criminalization
of our youth is for us inextricably linked to the larger struggle
for social justice.

The struggle toward social justice isn't about over looking
or excusing one form of criminal activity, while accepting
another insidious kind, disguise s being a war on drugs.
The war on drugs has allowed the rulers of this country to
unleash hordes of demented gun-slinging police into the
areas primarily occupied by poor working-class people of
color. This unrestrained assault upon this defenseless
population has resulted in vastly growing numbers of tragic

and unfortunate deaths of people. The sad reality of these
kinds of incidents is peipe are losing their lives for reasons
totally unrelated to a criminal act. To add insult to injury the
standard cliché is given by the police department. The
officer(s) involved acted within proper police procedure.
Whatever the incident, circumstances surrounding the
deaths of people by the hands of police. It's a consistent
theme the officer(s) acted on the belief their lives were
threatened. If in fact, this is the case, than why after not just
one, but countless incidents of unspeakable violent overkill
There are sl within the public domain so many unanswered
questions lingering. Why so often, so many questions exist
in the mind's of the public? The explaination given by the
police, their account of what took place, is viewed as
superficial, senseless in meaning to those who've become
accustomed to hearing it by virtue of their social standing in
society. Because this scene is repetitiously played
throughout this country, that common sense tells you
something is drastically wrong. The overwhelming high rise
in police executions of innocent victims under the pretext of
awar om drug, clearly points to the lack of respect for the
lives of these people. It shouldn't be difficult for people to
begin to recognize the mentality allowing police to operate
with unjustified hostility toward a particular segment of the
population. This kind of attitude exhibited by the police
positions those who're unfairly treated in such a demeaning
Manner to view the police as an occupational force. The
erroneaus previously held conception that the police are
three to serve and protect, is in the stage of being peeled
away 10 reveal the actual meaning of to serve and protect
motto People are now asking the question what's law and
order truly about? For who and what purpose laws are
mplemented for? And how are these laws designed to
serve the public interest? Answering these questions will
orovide the masses with much needed clarity, enabling them
o comprehend the real role police play in this saciety. Once
he masses develop a new perspective of how this force was
mplemented primarily to keep the working class poor and
eople of color in check. To make sure that profits continue
o flow unimpeded into the coffers of the capitalist-elte. It's
>ssential for the people to gasp fully this fact, if an attempt is

is to say the solution to the problem of police brutality does
not rest within various methods previously viewed and put
forth. The repealed calls for an independent community
review board fo act as a watchdog over police conduct. Will

system of justice must be abolished; its legislative branch,
department of justice, criminal and federal court system and
all police agencies. If there isn't any significant change at

Greetings in Solidarity

I received your zine (T.B. #14)
yesterday (10-3) and your letter today.
the zine has been very helpful in that the
institution is currently on total lock
down. Let me further explain the
situation.

I was finally let onto population late
Friday afternoon. Over the weekend I had
heard of some talk regarding a new policy
directive (#310) which would give the
authorities the right to take away much of
the inmates property. Being new to the
yard I had not heard of this new rule
which was about to be placed into effect,
though I knew it was trouble and would
effect the entire prison population, as
well as myself.

Monday morning I walked out onto the
yard to what I thought was just a regular
morning. I noticed a large group of
inmates standing around their units alt
along the hillside but thought nothing of
it. To my left I overheard the words "sit
down strike" mentioned, mad then I heard
it again in a different conversation to my
right That's when I really noticed that
something was going on.

I quickly proceeded to learn that the
inmates were on a work stoppage in protest
of policy directive #310. 1In total
agreement with their cause I converged
with the masses.
A code yellow emergency count was 73
called. 278 of us stayed in place in the
center of the yard. We watched as guards
positioned themselves around the complex
with guns ands video cameras. Finally one
officer came down to speak with is. The
warden was asked to come out and speak
with us and we were told that he wouldn't.

After the officer returned to the
buildings the inmates talked what was to
then be done. Though poor medical, food,
and visit situations are major and
important issues they began to overwhelm
the issue which was the cause of the
protest. The issue of policy #310.

A list was made and sent to the warden
stating that all of these (medical, food,
visits) issues must be changed and though
310 was among the list it sadly seemed to
be forgotten. We shortly got word that
the warden refused to consider any of the
issues.

About 3 hours into the protest, with
the hot sun spilling onto our heads, many
began to become weary and unfocused.
Complaints about hunger, thirst, ands
bathrooms began to flow throughout the

crowd. Sadly many forgot the situations
which we faced for the mere rumble of a
stomach or slight dryness of tongue. Just
because some grown men felt the need to
take a shit P.D. #310 no longer seemed to
matter.

A message was then delivered to the
authorities that the crown was becoming
restless with hunger and thirst (which I
felt was a mistake), letting the powers
that be know that many were willing to
give up.
The C.E.R.T. team in full gear then Y4
appeared on top of one of the units, riot
guns ands gas canisters in hand. With the
majority (sadly) ready to give up, we were
then ushered inside one at a time,
stripped down, and then placed in our
cells.

Two days now after this protest we
still all remain locked down. With the
inmates still refusing work the situation
concerning food is worsened and the
continued harassment by C.E.R.T. team
officers has increased. The feelings of
being forces to walk, naked as you are
surrounded by men in full body armor, of
riot guns being pointed directly into your
face, is kind of hard to put into words.

I feel anger toward the oppressors.
Anger toward their goon squad puppets.
And anger toward those who were willing to
give up because of tiredness. If we let
ourselves become of mind to give in when
tires or when faced with negative answers
from the mouths of our oppressors, then we
have already lost from the beginning. We
must strengthen ands educate ourselves and
one another and learn to never show any
weakness or tiring for that only helps our
enemy strengthen their stranglehold But
most important we must never give in. It
is our lives which is at stake.

Though the actions of the inmates two
days ago began through pure and good
intentions they were allows to be clouded
over and lost as the day went on. My
feelings of the activities are one of
mixed with frustration and pride. I was
proud of the solidarity that we the
inmates showed in standing together
(though it was only about half the ye
population) against what we felt caused
harm. The frustration from as I already
mentioned, the lose of focus (on issues),
and giving in upon tiring. I have learned
much from this experience and hope to be
able to use what knowledge I have gained
for the future. I only hope that our
mistakes be noticed so that they never be
made again.

drawn out long enough. I hope my thoughts
have come through clearly in this. Some-
times, through emotion, my thoughts become
jumbled and mixed, and my ideas are lost

in my rambling. Hopefully this isn't the
case. So if you have any questions please

| must be careful in my writings for | have been informed
that some of my correspondence is being monitored by the
oppressor. I've only been here one month and | am already
being investigated. | must be more careful though at the
same time cannot let them keep me from learning and
getting the truth out.

It has been 2 weeks now since the sit-down/protest. All
participants have been detained since the incident, under
reasons of “state of emergency”. On October 2", the day of
the protest there were 867 inmates at this insitution, only
278 protested. Those deemed (and snitched out) to be the
instigators have all been placed under seg from up to 2-5
years. The rest of us have only (as of yesterday) received
violation reports for the class 2 violation of “missing or
confusing count”. | do not appear in front of the magistrate
until October 23,

| read 2 articles from the Charleston Gazette (newspaper)
which ran a few articles on the inciderit. Being the main
paper for this state capitol of course it was ful of lies and
misinformation. The Warden was quoted as saying that
several inmates were found with shanks and that inmates
were seen placing metal weight bars up their sleeves. This
was all bullshit, the protest was completely peaceful. Many
of the inmates were wearing short sleeve shirts so how could
They have placed weight bars in their sleeves. There was a
mass of other fabrications such as how the prison is being
filled with "young violent guys who share the old timers”. |
know | was only on the yard a few days but | saw no violent
young scarcely guys. Shit, | am a 21-year-old 155-pound
vegan. Who the fuck could | scare? This is probably
Amerikas most laid back prison (as far as the inmate
attitudes go). Walking around the yard puts you in mind of a
retirement home. When the yard was closed on October 2"
many of the younger guys were the ones racing to their
units. There were some of us younger guys left outside to
protest though a large part of those protesting were the old
timers (including several in wheel chairs). 47

Being on current lock down status | have been unable to
really organize and/or collect any material from others as
you requested for your work with the Oct. 22™ coalition. |
will continue (o try though | am unsure if you wanted these
writings by a certain deadline. My ability to communicate
with the other inmates in this situation (being locked down) is
kind of difficult, especially since | am new and do not know
those on my unit (everyone | know is on other units).

As for witing of my own. Well my mind has been in
stubborn lock for the past year or so. | have the tendency to
become highly frustrated with my work and myself and flush
everything down the toilet where most of it rightfully belongs.
1'am though, struggling to compile some material which, if |
can keep composed and do ot happen to be over come by
frustration (upon which wil bring about a flushing spree), |
will send them to you upon completion.

Also, | would like to know if it matters to you which of your

Society has been overwhelmed by many serial ills for
years. These social ills have come in the form of
premeditated economic poverty to conditions that foster drug
addiction, prosfitution, Black on Black violence, to genocide.
But, were very people have been in poverty or overwhelming
repression, the spirit of courage and self-determination
creates a will to survive in these people. This is the beauty
of a minority of oppressed people on purpose, subjected to
economic poverty simply because they do ot fit a welcomed
status of White skin privilege.

Although such ills that permeate our society has caused
an almost permanent unreasonable scar on all oppressed
Nations in Amerikka. We have been able to still hold on, and
thrust in a greater day to come. While at the same time,
collectively work to organize and build a structure capable of
challenging world oppression on all levels. For these
persons who refuse to acknowledge the fact that most
revolutionary energy is coming and will continue to come
from inside prison. They are not looking into the looking
glass of live correctly.

After spending almost half of my life in prison (14 years of
my life), It would be a complete injustice for me to not be
honest about my experience her. Prison brutality is no
different from the police brutality permeating our oppressed
communities all across this country. Where it may slightly
differ from time 1o time. The level of national exposure the
outside ones receive that prison incidents of brutality don't
receive.

| have while serving time been actively on the front line
exposing issues of police brutality in prison. While at the
same time, using such incidenls to agitate, educate, and
organize prison fesistance. In some cases where this
violence has caused the death of some prisoners, the
families of the victims have received help to successfully file
wrongful death criminal law suites against prison officials.
On October 22, 2000 the movement against policel
brutality everywhere will faunch another massive protest.
The families of loved ones killed and those lockdown behind
prison walls will join in collective solidarity to say "No More
Violence™. We will stand in resistance also, whereever we
are. In Prison, jails, city lockups and all across this world.
We enforce the 7™ rule of the Black Panther party's 10-point
platform. By stating that we want an immediate end to police
brutality and murder of Black and oppressed minorities. We
believe we can end police brutality and murder of Black in
our communities by organizing self-defense groups that are
dedicated to defending our Black (New Afrikan) communities
from racist police oppression and brutality. ~The second
Amendment to the Constitution of the United States gives
the right to bear arms, we therefore believe that all Black
people bitterly preferred as (New Afrikan) in Amerikka should
arm themselves for self-defense.

We also evoke the 8" point of this platform and state that
the following: we want freedom for all (Black) New Afrikan

Here we are in this new millennium and it's truly a
blessing 10 be alive and able to prepare this vehicle to

struggles with the backsliding comprehending what I was

of Representatives that makes up the Congress. They

How are things going for the MPLU Missouri Prison
Labor Unlon & the boycott against Colgate-Palmolive?

Answer: The filssouri Prison Labor Unlon is a striving
prisoner rights organization, which is growing and
beconing iore established in the minds of each prisoner
Who 15 confined in Nissouri. Prisoners realize that
ue, the MY, is a force to advance our concerns and
interests. Fromoting the agenda of :FLU has resulted
in much opposition from the oDOC. I was housed in
ad seg for almost two years, transferred all over the
state for organizing the prisoners into a union. de
have a boycott against Colgate-Falmolive, in hopes of
getting then to endorse the HFLU. They have extensive
business dealings with many prisons, not just in
iidssourt.

2. You have recently been transferred to hoberly
Sorrectional Center from Potosi. Can you detall your
unique punishaent because of your strong advocacy?
And how are conditions for you, now?

Answer: ell Anthony, as you know, I was transferred
fron Jefferson City prison to Crossroads prison to Fed.
in 1997. Then, in August of 1997, I was transferred

to Totosi. In December of 1998, I was transferred to
Jefferson City prison. In iarch of 1999, I was sent
to Crossroads prison. Then, in Septesber 1999, I

as yet agaln transferred back to Jefferson City

prison and on September 28, 1999, I was transferred
baci to Fotosi. Now, all of that was done to break my
Spirit and to stop other prisoners from joining our
struggle, to embed fear in the minds of other prisoners.
One must go a long long way when one is trying to build
unity behind enemy lines. So, since I refuse to subait
to the DOC threats, harassments and frame-ups are
leveled against me. low, I've been transferred to
Foberly, which is a lower custody level, in order to
shut me up, to make me happy, content, etc. But

this 1s not working and I an more determined than ever!

have for your fellow prisoner brothers & sisters?
Also, what do you suggest is necessary to get

outside activists off the dime & into serious

prisoner support work?

Answer: T have been continuously harassed for my
work, here. First, I was placed in ad seg, next
I've encountered countless transfers from prison

o prison. I was kept in ad seg for two years for
nothing, my property was destroyed, my mail is
always read and coples are made of my letters.
Outside support is needed, in order for us to stop
forced prison slave labor. The Kissouri Prison
Lator Union needs serious outside support in the
state of Kissourl, first and foremost. ‘ore
activists are needed to get involved in the prison
issues. One must realize that slavery still exists
Within American prisons and we need to end this evil.

October 22nd Weekend

“Oclober 22nd" has now become the lerm crystalizing
oulrage over police violence. In dozens of cilies across the
counlry af this fime, people lake 1o the sireels in mililani
fashion. The vicitms and family members are given a
special place in our hearls and our signs. Their searing

testimony echoes through the plazas of the downlowns and
energizes us for the fight.

The Oclober 22 Coglifion is comprised of @ wide variely
of groups and individuals with various agendas, such as the.
fight fo protect public housing, the abolition of the death
penally. neighborhood organizations, prisoner support
groups. polilical organizations. prison aboiitionists andl
oulraged cifizens. A high level of purpcsefulness and
cooperalive energy is the striking fealure during the
organizing of these actions. Those involved, put their
sectarian agendas aside and set 1o work.

This year, since Oclober 22nd fell on a Sunday. the day of
action and remembrance evolved and expanded info a
whole weekend of events. On riday the 20ih, fhe large
rally and march took place at the Federal Plaza, in
Chicago's Loop. starling al noon. Music, speakers, iterature
lables, fiyers. newspapers, colorful banners and posters
festooned the whole area

Useful, enjoyable nelworking among aclivisis and flyering
o the noonday crowds, took place. Rivetling tesfimony
from Gwendolyn Hogan, whose husband Kelsey, was
murdered by a drunken off-duly prison guard, and ofhers,
sel the lone for the seriousness of Ihis siruggle for justice.

| was most impressed by the increased focus on and
parlicipation by Ihe gay. lesbian, bi and fransgendered
communilies, which was thiillingly arficulated by Andy
Thoyer, of the Chicago Anfi-Bashing Network (773-878-4783
CABNsloplhe hate@aol.com) His passionate oration stuck
in my mind, as the most impaciful all weekend.
Another development which | was very encouraged to
see greally expanded, was the increased emphasison S
solidarity with prisoners. For who are more the viclims of
police brutality (slate repression) and stolen lives
(incarceration) than the 2,000,000 prisoners in this locked
down country?

Hundreds of black balloons were blown up and fied to
strings with cords on them. The names of illinois “C"
prisoners - those cruelly crushed by the system and denied a
chance at parole - were writlen on these cards. Al one
point, folks holding the balloons were asked 1o lear off the
names of these prisoners, and let go of the string. Walching
this flock of balloons float over the crowd up and through
the skyscrapers of Chicago was a carnivaklike sighl. | was
especially happy, knowing these prisoners' addresses were
in people's pockets, so they could wrile to them later.

Another nolable display was af the Ocl. 22 fable. It was
alarge presentation board filled on both sides with
laminated 8 1/2x 11 prisoner artwork. These powerful &
lalented political statements, really concentrated the
message and brought home the fact that the struggle is the
same - inside and oul. Also, there was a poster with
snapshots of prisoners. Their dignity and delerminalion were
striking, especially as seen through the ubiquitous handcuffs
and prison suroundings. You can't jail the cry for freedom!

Most people went on the spirited march up and down
State Sireel. The street signs were covered over and the
slreels were renamed in honor of those of us who have
been murdered by the Chicago police. Thousands of
people saw a very determined, vocal and diverse group of
cilizens rising up angry! People were really info it, sefious
about this movemenl, yet at the same time, enjoying the
program. the balmy Indian Summer day and the stimulation
of ideas. Everybody seemed lo get a chance fo see a lof
of friends and make new conlacts. | would say 800 - 1,000
people came out to this demo - moslly dressed in black.

©On Saturday the 21st, two events took place. From 1 1o 5
a symposium was presented entilled “The State,

REPRESSION & The Movement: Wha lo Expecl, How 1o 54
Resisl." This featured a strong panel of longtime activists,
including Michael Deutsch, a revolutionary attorney, who
spoke about “Stale Repression & the Role of the F.

Hondo T'Chikwa, a black liberationist who spearheads
the Crossroads Support Network, lalked about “free Zolo
Agona Azania: The Death Penalty is Poiifical.” Benjamin
Evans of the Prairie Fire Organizing Committee spoke of
“Recenl Police Taclics in Seatlle, D. C., Philadelphia & L. A"
Halem Abudayyeh of the Arab-American Action Network,
gave a lalk entifled “Grand Juries Secrel Evidence &
Defending Palestinian and Arab Activists in the U,

. Nexi came Jose Lopez, Director of the Juan Antonio
Correljer Puerto Rican Cultural Center, who explained how
we should be “Resisling the Use of Repression Agains! the
Puerlo Rican Independence Movement.” Janet Hoft and
Melinda Power, longtime atforneys working with the
National Lawyers Guild, spoke on “What to Expect if You Are
Arested & What 1o Do In Coun."

This was followed by a good question/answer period.
Much pertinent literalure was available, including many
prisoner zines. Food was also provided. These types of
communily discussions should be happening everyday, in
every neighborhood. i

Laler. starling al 7 pm - Acl Your Rage was staged af
UIC. This was a celebration of youth culture - Hip-Hop, Rap.
Punk, Spoken Word etc. with a sirong poliical emphasis &
connection to October 22. Unfortunately, i was unable fo
allend this, as | would have loved to have tabled zines at
this show. I'm sure a lot of people had a good fime.

©On Sunday. October 22nd. starting at 3 pm the
“statement rally* occued. Over 300 people came fo the
front steps of the urban concentration camp, known as
Cook Counly Jail. Affer a few rousing speeches by Gwen
Hogan and others, we marched completely around this
razor wired encampment, stopping at each unit. We
brought our banners, strong voices, five-gallon buckels and
“hal-mile howlers" to shout out our suppor for our brothers
and sisters, being forced to subsist in this hellhole.

1 was awe-inspiting 1o hear the muffled roar of the S 7
prisoners, screaming their supporl, love and appreciation
out fo us. They were pressed close o the windows with
clench-fist salules, which we shot back ! them.

At one poinl, we slopped for quite a while, because
several prisoners ond @ few guards were in the yard, on the
Sacromenlo Avenue side. The youth cut fo the chase and
dispensed wilh the nicey-nice chants and simply started
shouting “Fuck the Po-lice! Fuck the Po-lice!” This simple.
infeclious message grew loud and longlosting. Even under
the eye of the guards. the prisoners acknowledged us with
their raised fists. It was wild and fun and powerful and the
order-loking cops and guards hid behind their guns, inside
their cars &/or stations - powerless 10 do anything about it
For they're like hyenas and only gang up to prey on the
vuinerable. There is definitely strength in numberst

On the way back, along 26th Sireel, taggers logged the
brick walls with stinging messages. We regrouped of the
front entrance and continued 1o rally and hear speakers.

1 was very pleased with this demo. os we'd only had 1
month from conceplualizing it to doing it. | had hoped for
wo hundred and no less thon one hundred, ond over three
hundred come! it was a high-oclane, special group.

' wos the lost specker and fried to give the weekend o
proper crescendo-like finish. | believe this will become on
annual action during the October 22nd period, here in
Chicago and will encourage those in others ciies to do
something similar. As the repression increases, we mus! work
much more closely wilh prisoners willing fo struggle and
face the wors! this sadistic state confinues 1o assaull us with.
